Do you think EBT recipients should be required to spend their money on healthy food

My presentation is based on the crisis surrounding food stamps. Although recipients of food stamps have certain restrictions (listed here and here ) they are allowed to purchase about everything on the shelf. In class, I will present how the authors we have read would view this, statistics of Food stamp vs non-food stamp recipients, the challenges that are present, times the government failed on setting nutritional standards, and other scenarios, opinions, and alternative solutions.

Be prepared to discuss the following after my presentation:
Should EBT recipients be forced to spend their money on healthy food?
What if anything distinguishes Food stamps from WIC?
How much government control is needed to regulate the SNAP systems?
With a variety of dietary needs would it be worth implementing restrictions?
Does the greater good of the population outweigh individual rights? (bit of a stretch for this topic but we will get there ;))
Do you think the current system works? What solution would you propose?

  3. I think this is a great talk idea! I'm wondering how you might include how people may be selling their food stamps to purchase other items anyway.
