'Our Father' Netflix film focuses on fertility doctor who used own sperm to impregnate women

"Years ago, several Indiana residents found out their father, who some had believed to be an anonymous sperm donor or the man who had raised them, was actually their mother's doctor: Donald Cline.

Cline, once a well-respected fertility doctor in Indianapolis, used his own sperm to inseminate patients without their knowledge for years. Some became pregnant and unknowingly had Cline's biological children.

The children will soon tell the story in their own words in the Netflix documentary film "Our Father," coming to the streaming service on May 11.

“A top fertility doctor had a sickening secret: he was using his own sperm,” the Netflix synopsis reads. “Decades later, his ‘children’ band together to pursue justice.”

Cline's secret was discovered in 2014, when Jacoba Ballard took a DNA test. Ballard, who had expected to have one or two donor half-siblings, discovered seven other half-siblings — and the story grew more complicated from there.

Ballard’s mother, along with the others, shared a common story: Their mothers had all gone to Dr. Cline, who had told them that they would be inseminated with material from anonymous sperm donor, whose sperm would not be used more than three times to conceive a child.

In 2016, it was discovered that one of Cline’s first cousins was a "close match" to Ballard and the others. Eventually, Ballard and some of her other half-siblings confronted Cline, who admitted to using his own sperm."

  1. This case still creeps me out, and honestly I can't justify in my head the profit that people will make off this film. Definitely an important issue to discuss, but I don't know about making a move out of it. Thanks for the share!
