Walking Just 10 Minutes a Day May Lead to a Longer Life (and better philosophizing!)

Ten minutes of moderate exercise daily would prevent more than 111,000 premature deaths a year, a new analysis found.

If almost all of us started walking for an extra 10 minutes a day, we could, collectively, prevent more than 111,000 deaths every year, according to an enlightening new study of movement and mortality. Published this week in JAMA Internal Medicine, the study used data about physical activity and death rates for thousands of American adults to estimate how many deaths every year might be averted if everyone exercised more. The results indicate that even a little extra physical activity by each of us could potentially stave off hundreds of thousands of premature deaths over the coming years... (continues)

  1. That's what is so funny about life, its so fleeting and yet so easy to attain more should we truly desire it. Of course some situations are out of any one persons hands and if its your time there is not much you can do. A mere 10 min daily could add years onto each one of our lives yet we choose to do other things. This really shows where our priorities are as a society. It is no longer about making yourself better, its all about consuming as much as we can put into our faces before we croak.

  2. That's a crazy statistic! You always hear about how "running" or other strenuous exercise can keep you healthy, but few people realize that something as simple as walking can make a huge difference. I personally try to move everyday, whether it be the gym or going on a run. Now I'll definitely start incorporating walking too!

  3. I think it's insane how a basic thing like walking is all we need to live longer, but it makes sense with the rise of technology in today's time no one's walking or even moving as much as we should. I think this is a great thing for people to do, even if you don't classify yourself as an athletic person, walking is a great exercise and can also be extremely therapeutic.

  4. Wow, just 10 minutes of walking.. I personally love to take walks. I use it as a time to escape the stresses of school and just enjoy nature and fresh air. It is sad to think that there is probably a large group of individuals who cannot make time for a 10 minute walk throughout the day, whatever their profession may be. I think not making time for personal health is a dangerous place to be that can only add more stress. It is sooo important to take care of our bodies and minds!
