By Altering the Blood Type of Lungs, Researchers Raise the Possibility of Universal Organs for Transplants

Their research shows proof-of-concept: Lungs from a type A donor could be treated with the enzymes for a few hours and emerge with the cellular appearance of having O blood type. And, the treated lungs weren’t damaged when they came into contact with O blood plasma during a transplant simulation. “Like a camouflage,” Cypel said. Antibodies “won’t recognize the cells anymore as being a different blood type.”
I thought this was really interesting as this could help so many people who are dying because they aren't receiving organs from a matching donor. It would also help open up more organs for people who are waiting years before they get the necessary matching organ and their quality of life is improved.
