The COVID pandemic has killed more than half a million people in the United States and caused the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. If this pandemic taught us one thing, it's that we weren't ready for it. The scientific and medical community wasn't ready. The government, the military and industry weren't ready. And most of us at home weren't ready either: scrambling for basic supplies, regretting not having a deeper pantry and struggling with the financial fallout... (Scientific American, continues)
The more I read about COVID and the lack of preparation, the more I am saddened to see how truly a matter of health has turned into a matter of politics. I understand that it is hard to separate the two given that the government is in charge of healthcare (basically). I so badly wish that as a country we could learn from our mistakes, think of the future and how to better be prepared, and then move forward together as one. I think that it would be to our benefit to begin considering times other than now. One thing I love to be is prepared (I would honestly call it a personality trait at this point).
ReplyDeleteBe Prepared! (The Scout Motto) These past two years have indeed been a sad chapter in U.S. history. I will point out that the most vulnerable group is also the most vaccinated group (us old codgers). However, it was within the younger populations that many people did not care enough about protecting their older family members, co-workers, and neighbors to be responsible and get a free vaccine. Being the most individualistic nation in the world has translated into being the most selfish nation and has not served us well in this pandemic. Ultimately, even if government officials are motivated to protect those who elected them, it is up to each of us as individuals and influencers to see that the good and right thing is done when we are facing a national disaster. We seem to do a lot better after tornadoes and hurricanes. Why is it so attractive to do good at those times and not during a Pandemic?
