About 96% of Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital COVID-19 patients unvaccinated - from The Daily News Journal

COVID-19 cases with the omicron variant have nearly tripled the past six weeks in Rutherford County. About 96% of  hospital patients are unvaccinated.

  • Health departments offer COVID-19 testing, vaccinations
  • Hospitals seek to hire more nurses, other medical staff
  • Rutherford County had first COVID-19 cases March 13, 2020
  • Total COVID-19 cases in county have climbed to 67,077 with 724 deaths by Dec. 28

COVID-19 cases are on the rise again in Rutherford County. And the top executive at the area's largest hospital recognizes an unfortunate trend.

"Of our COVID-19 population that's in the hospital, approximately 96% are unvaccinated," said Gordon Ferguson, the president and chief executive officer at Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro.

Saint Thomas does not provide COVID-19 hospitalization counts.

Still, the percentage is a troubling statistic as COVID-19 cases in the county have more than tripled in the past six weeks — from 632 (Nov. 15) to 2,199 (Dec. 29) — part of a national trend. The cases also have more than doubled in the past two weeks, from a count of 968 (Dec. 13).

With each case, likely caused by the delta and omicron variants, the pandemic moves closer to causing another round of restrictions or shutdowns...
