"My life will be complete when ___." That's a tough blank to fill in! People in Boston used to say "...when the Sox when the World Series." (On Chicago's north side they still say it, about their Cubbies.) But what then?

For my part, my life will be complete (though not necessarily over) when I've seen my children happily and independently launched on their lives & careers, when I've spent quality time with my grandchildren, when I've published everything I think I have to say, when I can no longer amble around the block with my dogs... let me think about this some more. For a long time.

They work with herbs
and penicillin.
They work with gentleness
and the scalpel.
They dig out the cancer,
close an incision

They are not Gods
