Wanted to give you all (and myself) some Monday inspiration. I also think that this quote is relevant to some of the issues we have been discussing. In many cases, like climate change and public health infrastructure, there is a sense that we should have made major changes years ago. Of course, doing this would have helped us be further along than we are now. However, it is important to not get stuck in a "it's too late to fix it" mentality. I suppose I am also a melliorist (though I didn't know that term before this class) because I believe that we can improve many of the problems that face us. But we have to actively work toward it. So, whether it's a paper you're procrastinating on or a world issue you want to tackle, the first step is to start.

  1. I really love your motivation, Maria! Definitely something we all need to hear, especially on a Monday. I hope the leaders of the world can adopt this way of thinking!

  2. Meliorists of the world, unite! We have nothing to lose but our despair!

Seriously, I was heartened to see this story about a rising generation of younger environmentalists who reject gloom and doom and want to get busy reversing the worst effects of climate change.

‘OK Doomer’ and the Climate Advocates Who Say It’s Not Too Late'

Alaina Wood is well aware that, planetarily speaking, things aren't looking so great. She's read the dire climate reports, tracked cataclysmic weather events and gone through more than a few dark nights of the soul.

She is also part of a growing cadre of people, many of them young, who are fighting climate doomism, the notion that it's too late to turn things around. They believe that focusing solely on terrible climate news can sow dread and paralysis, foster inaction, and become a self-fulfilling prophecy...

  3. Ultimately big problems are solved not by big government or business entities but by a concerted effort of most of the individuals being affected by those problems. The U.S. was not prepared for Pearl Harbor, but when most of the citizens got behind the war effort which was a matter of survival for everyone, the war ended, and peace (until lately) ensued. A similar worldwide effort seems to be underway regarding Ukraine today. Likewise, climate change may be quietly addressed one person and one household at a time when most people begin working together on that problem.
