We begin with an invitation: tell us who you are, and why you're here. We'll introduce ourselves in class and online (hit "comments" below). I'll start.
I'm the prof for this course, PHIL 3345, Bioethics. I hold degrees from the University of Missouri and Vanderbilt, and I'm here because the ethics of life and death is at the very heart of what philosophy, defined as the love of (and quest for) wisdom, is about. I'm still here in middle Tennessee, after relocating for Grad School, because I met my wife here and decided to stay.
I also teach courses on Atheism, Environmental Ethics, and Happiness, among others.
Enough about me.
Who are you? Why are you here? (Bear in mind, as you reply, that this is an open site. There's nothing preventing the world from reading what we post here, except of course the world's own distraction.)

ReplyDeleteI transferred to MTSU from ETSU 2 years ago and I am looking forward to graduating in May 2017. My major is political science with a minor in philosophy, with hopes of attending Law school within the next 2 years.
I would like to invite anyone to join me for the midterm project: When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalantithi. I have heard many great things about this book and have been wanting to read it for some time now. This is about a physician with stage IV lung cancer and his story all the way up until he dies while writing the book. Please let me know if anyone is interested in doing this with me!! Thanks.

ReplyDeleteHello everyone, my name is Tanner (or T-Rex). I am a philosophy major here at MTSU, and I am pretty much taking every philosophy course I can get my hands on, but I have a particular affinity for ethics. I love contemplating the idea of what obligations we as humans have to the rest of the world and what different flavors of right and wrong may look like to other people.
ReplyDeleteAs I said in class today, I just finished Sherwin Nuland's book "How We Die," and I am planning on reading the sequel to it "How We Live." So if anyone is interested in reading a couple of chapters of it with me we can work together on the group project that is fast approaching. Feel free to email me or talk to me after class.
As I also mentioned I am a pretty avid motorcyclist. If anyone else rides and is looking for someone to ride with I'm always open to seeing some new roads or just meeting another fellow rider. Hope everyone has a good semester!

Hi guys! My name is Bethany. I am a psychology major, but I am also in the pre-medical program. I'm a junior right now, so I will be applying for medical school this summer. I guess a little bit about me is that I recently got married last October and I work at a pathology lab in Nashville as a tech.
ReplyDeleteHey guys, my name is Roderick, but most people just call me Derick. I am currently a Biochem major, and plan to apply to medical school over the summer. I guess an interesting thing about me is that I am currently conducting undergraduate research in the chemistry department out here, and I will be presenting said research at the 253rd annual American Chemical Society meetup in San Francisco, California. It has been great to meet everyone, and I hope we all enjoy this class.

I'm a psych major with a serious side interest in astronomy, and I'm taking this class because . . . well, I guess I want to talk about all of this life/death/future stuff so I can really get a handle on where I stand on it all. I know that sounds vague, but I'm sincerely raring to ponder some of the topics ahead, and pondering with others is a nice prospect. Something interesting about me? ReplyDeleteHello! My name is Nolton and I am a biochemistry major and currently a sophomore. Bioethics was not my first choice for a elective and I was at first not excited about taking this class. However my opinion has changed and come to realize that bioethics can have a very practical application in my career and life. I am genuinely excited about taking the class with y'all this semester!

I am a junior, but since I transferred from Motlow State I am behind. I am hoping to graduate just a semester late which is fine since I am in no rush to grow up!

I am taking this course solely because I am interested in it. A few of my friends recommended this class to me so I figured I would give it a shot!

Dr. Oliver was great in the environmental ethics and I'm sure Bioethics will be just as engaging, if not a little more upbeat. Hit me up on those group projects and I'll probably do all the work.
ReplyDeleteHello my good people! I am a Biology major with a concentration in Physiology. I have four minors in Chemistry, Mathematics, Psychology, and Global Studies. I graduate this May 2017. I grew up on a cattle farm, so I love to do just about anything outdoors. I also ride motorcycles and love my TJ Wrangler. I am taking this class because I am a very religious man and I want to know how to effectively go about communicating with patients with different beliefs when I am in medical school. I look forward to this class and meeting new people:)
