Conversations with A.I.

NOVA - Conversation with A.I.

I guess there is no class today.  Here's something fun, weird, interesting, scary, amazing...
It's a 3 1/2 minute segment from NOVA where the host has a developing conversation with A.I.  The robot starts off slow but over the course of the conversation quickly generates facial and voice recognition and even starts to develop responses that are partly his own, in real time; that is they are not programmed.  They go on to discuss Descartes and a possible Terminator future.  Don't worry, Philip says he'll take good care of us.

  1. Uncanny. Our own eagerness to be taken in by the simulation has a lot to do with the verisimilitude of the most sophisticated AI, and will have a lot to do with how well or badly our bio-mechanical future goes. Most of us don't yet really believe the machines are "alive," will they still be so cute when they don't just sit there are respond attentively to our talk?

Again: anyone intrigued by this stuff should take a look at Powers' earlier novel "Galatea 2.2."
