Lets Go Green! Wait, Why? (Final Blog (1 of 4))

Up until a year ago, I had the "American Philosophy" on Going Green? "Why me?" pretty much sums up America's mentality on fixing problems that we create. It is the basis for our arrogance towards Mother Earth. We, humans were given the Earth to live, succeed, and
flourish. That pretty much assumes the top of the food chain role. Even as a Christian, we are given instructions and convicted about keeping an awareness about mother Earth.

Job 12:7-10 - But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you.
Genesis 1:26 - Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.'
This particular verse uses rule in the sense of guide/look over not conquer.
The following are verses chastising Christians for their inability to have respect for mother Earth.
Ezekial 34:2-4 - Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have only ruled them harshly and brutally.
Jeremiah 2:7 - I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable.

I say that to point out, even after all that, I was not brought into awareness about the state of our planet. It is not that things are so bad now. The awareness should be about how quickly our resources are depleting, and at the present rate, there really will be a crisis on our hands.
It was the passion of one, particularly well known, man that changed my perspective. After seeing the determination and commitment of Ian Somerhaulder, I realized that it was time to get educated! To me, that is the start of a solution, Education!

So, my blog is to introduce problems, show some opinions of the common man, and provide some practical resources we all can be involved in to either create awareness or change our course directly. It's not always about being an activist! Passive aggressive can be successful as well! Education is the basis for the passive aggressive stance!

  1. "Passive aggressive" is an interesting and apt term for how many alleged "friends of the earth" actually comport themselves, viz., with indifference bordering on hostility. But maybe you have in mind a more benign definition? I look forward to your posts! (And if you're still on campus in Fall '14, the Environmental Ethics class will be back...)
